So, I mailed these accursed mittens (backstory: see post of December 2) on December 7th, hoping they'd reach B and F in West Roxbury--a suburb of Boston, about 75 miles from my house--on or before December 9th, when F was leaving for a holiday stay in his native Switzerland (to be joined on 23 December by B). Besides postage, I paid for Tracking and $50 of insurance. (Quandary: how does one assign monetary value to hand-knitted mittens? The yarn itself was probably only a few dollars.) And then, when I heard nothing from my friends, I tracked. Reader, I kid you not, the US Postal Service has LOST these mittens.
They are not admitting to loss, not yet. They say the mittens were sent to Lawrence, MA, where they arrived on December 10th. And then the trail goes cold.
Has the universe spoken?
